RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
