It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
