This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
