Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
